Designing a 3D model is exciting — but even small mistakes can ruin your print. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate designer, avoiding common errors will save filament, time, and headaches. In this blog, we highlight the most frequent design problems people make and how to fix them before printing.
❌ 1. Non-Manifold Geometry
A non-manifold model is not watertight — it has holes, gaps, or edges that confuse slicers.
Example Issues | Solution |
---|---|
Floating faces | Remove or connect them |
Internal walls | Delete hidden surfaces |
Open edges | Use mesh repair tools like Netfabb, Meshmixer, or 3D Builder |
✅ Make sure your model is one solid piece before exporting.
❌ 2. Too-Thin Walls
Walls thinner than 0.8–1.2 mm may:
- Not slice properly
- Break easily during or after printing
✅ Check slicer preview: ensure your walls show at least 2 perimeters.
❌ 3. Unsupported Overhangs
Overhangs beyond 45° may sag or fail.
✅ Add supports in slicing software or redesign with angled surfaces or arches.
❌ 4. Incorrect Model Scale or Units
Designing in inches, exporting in mm = HUGE or TINY model.
✅ Always:
- Use millimeters (mm) as the base unit
- Check scale during STL export
- Preview model size in slicer before printing
❌ 5. Floating or Disconnected Parts
Your model has parts that are:
- Not attached
- Hovering in air
- Misaligned with the base
✅ Run “Combine/Merge” or “Union Boolean” to make it one object.
❌ 6. Sharp Internal Corners or Thin Pins
These can snap or warp during cooling.
✅ Use fillets to round internal edges and reinforce pins or tabs.
❌ 7. Complex or Excessive Supports
Over-designed models need too many supports = waste + rough finish.
✅ Use:
- Bridges instead of large gaps
- Chamfers instead of 90° ledges
- Split models into multiple parts if needed
❌ 8. No Clearance for Moving Parts
If you design joints, gears, or slots too tight, they’ll fuse together.
✅ Add clearance of at least 0.2–0.5 mm between moving parts.
✅ Bonus: How to Check for Errors Before Printing
- 🧰 Use repair tools: Netfabb, MakePrintable, Meshmixer
- 👁️ View in slicer: Cura, PrusaSlicer show missing parts and thickness
- 🧪 Test print small sections: Save time and materials
